I was planning to take an international trip in September of 2009 and didn’t want to lug my “full sized” 14″ HP laptop on the airplane for a 9 hour flight. I also was concerned about running out of battery life on such a long trip. So, after much research I ordered this netbook with the 9 cell battery. I also ordered an extra 2gb of memory to avoid potential problems with software I intended to install. As, soon as I received the package I opened the box and installed the memory. I then charged the unit and began using it. After about 3 days I tested the battery life by taking an overnight trip without the charger. I was able to use the netbook for normal activities (not constant use) and return the next day with time left on the battery. I’ve found that there’s really no need to turn this unit off. I simply close the lid and the power comsumptions goes down to a trickle. That way I avoid going through the startup process. I installed several applications I normally use on my full sized notebook including Firefox, Nikon NX2, Microsoft Project 2007, Nikon Picture Project, Mindmanager, Avast antivirus, iTunes, Zune and a couple of others. None of these had any problems working on the netbook. It’s important to remember that this machine is not designed to multitask so it’s one function at a time or you going to see lags in the operations. You can open multiple apps, but you can only use one at at time. When I download updates with iTunes I turn simultaneous downloads off. The wireless 802.11n is very fast downloading faster than my full sized laptops which have 802.11g. My one complaint it that the outside of the unit is dark blue and collects finger prints immediately after cleaning. I keep a microfiber cloth in the bag just to wipe it down. I only recharge the unit at night and even then, not if I haven’t used it more than 3 or 4 hours. All in all a great choice.
